Four Middle West Press Titles Receive Mentions in 2024 Dole Book Awards

The Veterans Studies Association has announced four books published by Middle West Press LLC in 2022-2023 have been recognized with honorable mentions in the inaugural Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole Biennial Award for Distinguished Book in Veterans Studies.

The association's announcement reads, in part: "This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of veterans studies, highlighting works that engage with critical issues, perspectives, and experiences."

The Middle West Press books are:

  • "The Time War Takes: Poems" by Jessi M. Atherton. A poetry collection about war and its aftermath by a former member of the Michigan Army National Guard.

An awards luncheon will be held at the organization's biennial conference  March 14-15, 2024 at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Co-hosted by University of South Carolina Veterans and Military Services and the University of South Carolina Press, this year's event regards societal shifts in attentions and honors paid to military veterans.


Established in 2013, the Veterans Studies Association has conducted previous conferences in 2014, 2015, and 2022. The association also publishes the Journal of Veterans Studies, an open-access, peer-reviewed and multi-disciplinary on-line journal. The group's mission statement reads:

The Veterans Studies Association promotes and publishes rigorous scholarship about critical issues shaping veterans’ experiences—in any country and any historical era—to enhance public understanding, teaching, service, and advocacy.

Middle West Press LLC (www.middlewestpress.com) is a Johnston, Iowa-based editor and publisher of non-fiction, journalism, and poetry. As an independent micro-press, we publish one to four titles annually. Our projects are often inspired by the people, places, and history of the American Midwest.

Anthology Seeks Visions of American Midwest in Poems, Micro-Stories

Middle West Press LLC , an independent micro-publisher based in Central Iowa, has issued a call for human-generated poems and micro-prose (300 words max.) engaging with themes of environmentalism, climate change, technology, and more through a lens of Midwestern experience. The working title of this project is Midwest Futures: Poems from Tomorrow's Heartland . Deadline for submissions is Jul. 1, 2024. Publication is projected for Spring/Summer 2025. Returned from Afghanistan, Oklahoma War Poet Wrestles with Parenthood

In her debut collection of poetry, Paying for Gas with Quarters , U.S. Army veteran Aly Allen explores and illuminates the war in Afghanistan , wartime and childhood traumas , and the challenges of  post-war parenthood . Allen deployed to Afghanistan as a broadcast journalist with the U.S. 10th Mountain Division . A divorced parent of two, Allen is neurodivergent, as are her kids.
